The School has many links with the local community and we get involoved with lots of events throughout the year including taking part in The Otley Show & Otley Carnival & the Annual Otley Road Safety Quiz. Our Harvest Festival is held at Otley Bridge Church with donations being sent to one of the church's own charity, "The Edge" and Caring For Life on the Chevin. We sing at The Victorian Fayre and the Christmas Tree Festival in Otley Parish Church and have been invited to sing at the Otley Christmas Lights Switch On.
We also enjoy participating in the Yorkshire In Bloom competition every July and have had much success over the years coming highly placed. Our certificates are proudly displayed on our noticeboard.
There was great excitement when a stage of the 2016 Tour De Yorkshire started in Otley and a large group of children from across the school helped lead the out the men's race on their own cycles. We have a proud heritage of cycling at the school, Ladies World Champion, Lizzie Armitstead being a former pupil.
Our children always enjoy visiting the annual Science Festival held at Otley Courthouse and in 2016 year we were invited to have a stand and demonstrate experiments at the Saturday Open Day, along with many large companies from across the region, including The Thackray Medical Museum, University of Leeds & The Society of Dyers and Colourists. Our children took part with great enthusiasm.
2019 Otley Show
Yet again many of our classes entered items into the Handicraft Section of The 210th Otley Show.
We have been doing this for many years and the children are always delighted when they have a winning entry.
It was lovely to read what Show Secretary, Janet Raw, wrote in the Welcome section of the show programme
"we are endebted to The Whartons Primary School for their continued support for our Handicraft section, again giving us well over 350 junior entries!"
